Fuscidea mayrhoferi Kantvilas

  Thallus pale brownish grey with a faint pinkish tinge, 160–300 µm thick, lacking a well-developed marginal prothallus, smooth, rimose-areolate, esorediate; photobiont cells ±round, 8–16 µm wide; medulla I–, K+ intense yellow and then developing red needle-like crystals. Apothecia scattered, roundish, 0.20–0.58 mm wide, 160–200 µm thick, at first immersed in the thallus, becoming emergent but broadly adnate, usually retaining a very thin rim of thalline tissue resembling a ragged ±incomplete thalline margin c. 20 µm thick; proper margin excluded, not evident; disc black, plane to undulate to convex, sometimes glossy. Hypothecium 50–150 µm thick, inspersed with oil droplets 2–10 µm diam., hyaline, I–, K+ intense yellow, producing red needle-like crystals. Hymenium hyaline to pale brown, occasionally inspersed with oil droplets, I+ deep blue, 40–55 µm thick, with an olive-brown epihymenial zone 5–10 µm thick, composed of the pigmented upper portions of the paraphyses, turning dingy olive-grey in KOH. Paraphyses 2–3 µm thick, sparingly branched, with apices not or only slightly expanded to 3–4 µm and only weakly pigmented olive-grey. Asci 38–45 × 16–22 µm, oblong-ellipsoidal. Ascospores simple, rarely 1-septate, colourless to pale grey, oblong-ellipsoidal, rarely slightly constricted centrally or bent, 10–14 (–16) × 5–7 µm. Pycnidia uncommon, visible as ragged holes in the upper surface of the thallus. Conidia ellipsoidal, 4–5 × 1.5–2.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellow → red, KC–, C–, Pd+ orange, UV–; containing norstictic and connorstictic acids.
     
  Known only from the type locality in south-western W.A.; grows on schist at c. 900–1000 m altitude.
